Canungra Show
27 August 2011, Gates open at 10am
The Canungra Show is held in August each year and is a great country show for all ages. It is an integral part of the Canungra social scene and provides a chance for locals to catch up with each other, as well as to display their talents in some of the many ring events and pavillions.
Of course, the Show also attracts visitors from the Gold Coast, Brisbane and further afield, many of whom find it is a friendly little show, ideal for taking children of any age. The range of activities and rides and the close proximity of the attractions make it a great show for young children. Be aware, however that accommodation in Canungra over the show weekend is at a premium, so book your accommodation early.
As part of Queensland's equine kindergarten, Canungra Show's horse events are numerous and competitive. Classes include led and riding ponies, thoroughbreds, arabs, clydesdale, side saddle, paint, buckskin and the ever-popular showjumping classes, which provide great viewing for spectators.
The cattle classes cater for dairy and beef cattle with dairy breeds including Ayrshire, Illawarra, Jersey, and Guernsey and beef cattle divided into Tropical, European and Small Breeds/British Combined. There is also a Junior Handlers Section which is open to children from 8 years. A great way to get your children involved in showing!
For the gardeners there is a range of classes in which to enter your valued vegetables and flowers. The flower arranging class is always well-contested with keen locals happy to display their prize blooms. The vegetables are also a great source of pride in our rural community and you can view the best of the best in the main pavillion just before sideshow alley.
If you are good with your hands and able to paint, cook or create beautiful things out of anything, take a look at the fine arts, cookery, photography or needlework classes. These classes have traditionally been held in high regard in the community and are a real chance to show off the talents that might otherwise be hidden at home. Some beautiful paintings and sumptous looking cakes are entered each year. Many of the paintings are also for sale from the artists.
Entertainment on the day ranges from roving comedians to the local Fitness and Dance Troupe who always perform some of their best dances for the crowds. Pig racing is also a popular (if unusual) attraction - if you haven't witnessed this before, don't miss it this year!
There is something for everyone at Canungra Show. The woodchopping, held behind the bar and main pavillion, attracts a large crowd who enjoy sitting on the hill watching the action. The Ute Show and Shine is held in the main ring mid-late afternoon and classes include 'Best Town Ute', 'Best Feral Ute' and 'Best Chicks Ute'. There are also ribbons awarded to 'Most Stickers', 'Biggest Bullbar'and 'Most Elaborate Mags'! Go the utes!
