Canungra Campdraft
3 & 4 September 2011
Campdrafting is an exciting sport to compete in and to watch. It is a truly Australian sport, originating in the early twentieth century with the Australian stockman.
When a beast has to be divided from the mob, the stockman (or woman) rides in to 'cut out' the beast. This requires a great deal of skill and instinct from both the horse and rider who block the beast to prevent it returning to the mob - which is it's natural instinct. In the early days, this was done by a team of horsemen holding the cattle on an open plain while a lone rider 'cut out' the beast. Later competitions were developed which were the early versions of the current campdraft competitions.
Today, campdrafts are held with cattle held in a set of yards attached to an arena. The competitor 'cuts out' a beast from the yard and guides it around a set course. Points are scored on the basis of cut out, horse work and course completion (of which time is a factor). The skills lies not only in the horse and rider's ability to complete the course successfully, but also the rider's ability to select a beast which will run well.
The Canungra Campdraft is well supported by local riders and by the graziers who provide cattle for the Campdraft.
